A Modern Transformation of a Family Cottage
This charming cottage underwent a remarkable transformation to become a bright, functional, and energy-efficient home.

The original cottage had a poor layout, lacking essential spaces like a dining area and utility room. Its low energy rating also made it unsuitable for modern living. To address these challenges, the original structure was renovated, and a thoughtfully designed extension was added, creating a seamless blend of old and new.

Given the long and narrow site, the extension was designed to follow a linear form. The mass and bulk of the structure were cleverly broken into narrow-plan elements, allowing light and sunshine to penetrate deep into the house. This innovative approach ensures the home feels open and airy despite its constrained site.

Located adjacent to a public road, privacy was a key consideration. A high-level, long horizontal window was installed in the kitchen, facing the road. This unique feature provides privacy for the residents while framing beautiful views of the adjoining fields, offering a sense of connection to the surrounding landscape.

This project showcases how thoughtful design can turn a traditional cottage into a modern, functional, and light-filled family home.
